10/7/2007
I think I'm gonna hang myself if I see another Juicy purse. Just kidding, but seriously girls, its been a while since we've whipped up a few Birkin bags, or even Judith Leibers, for goodness bake!

The way the cookie crumbles...
8/8/2007
A bride came in and saw a collection of cookies we were making for a client of ours. She asked if we could make them for her wedding and I kindly explained to her that we only create custom designed cookies if you order a cake from us. She told us that she already ordered her cake from another bakery. I asked her to ask the other bakery to make them for her...she said that their cookies are not as nice as ours. She went on and demanded that I make her cookies for her -- that her wedding just wouldn't be the same. I jokingly mentioned that a cake would also not be the same if its not from Lulu. Why don't we take orders for just cookies? Well, fortunately, and unfortunately, we are so busy that we simply don't have the time to make custom cookies at all -- but as an amenity to brides or other people who order cakes from us, I offer them the cookie option. To be quite frank, making cookies are a pain in the ass -- they are labor intensive and very time consuming. They take up a lot of space, and the profit margin on cookies are very marginal. If we charged, say, at least $10 a cookie, we could continue selling cookies to everyone. But I'm really not in the business of ripping people off. We work hard, get paid hard and want to love what we do. Cookie orders are off the charts, I can't begin to tell you how many people order cookies from us...just like the cupcakes, cookie orders are booked for months.
Therefore, for the time being, clients who order cakes from us have first dibs on our cookies.
How did we resolve the situation? I offered to teach her baker how to make cookies that look like ours. He's coming in on Tuesday and I'm going to spend a few hours with him, showing him how to pipe some kick ass bridal cookies. I know it seems like giving away my trade secrets, but come to think of it -- a sense of style, a knack for design, and imagination cannot be taught. It is something one is born with. Craftmanship can only go so far. People come to us for their creations not only because our cakes taste good, but because we are artists who create. Moreover, they pay for our ideas and our vision. Thank God for that!

Hair Bands Rock!

Rock Guitar cake. I used to love 80's hair metal, so finding inspiration wasn't so bad. But shhhh, don't tell anyone, I promise I don't have Def Leppard on my iPod!

My favorite video on YouTube is of a dsyfunctional drag queen performing the underground hit "Shoes." I was reminded of how many clients ask us to sculpt shoes for their special events. This pair of Reebok running shoes are a little more masculine than Manolos. But at Lulu's, we make Manolos every week!
